Hermann Carl Vogel (April 3 1842 – August 13 1907) was a German astronomer.
He performed detailed spectroscopic analyses of various celestial objects, being the first to determine the Suns rotation period through Doppler shift. He also measured Doppler shifts of stars to determine their radial velocities. By obtaining periodic Doppler shifts in the components of Algol he proved it to be a binary star; thus, Algol was one of the first known spectroscopic binaries (and of course it is in fact an eclipsing binary).
He won the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1893 and the Bruce Medal in 1906. Craters on Mars and the Moon are named in his honor.
