Henbane, Hyoscyamos Niger (Solanaceae) originated in Eurasia where it was used in combination with other plants, such as mandrake, as an anaesthetic potion.
Traditionally used in German pilsner beers as a flavouring, until the introduction of the Bavarian Purity Law in 1614 outlawed the use of Henbane and allowed only the sole use of hops.
