Heavenly Ski Resort

Heavenly Ski Resort is a ski resort located on the California-Nevada border in south Lake Tahoe. It has 85 runs and 29 lifts that are spread between California and Nevada and a four base facility. The resort was recently purchased by the Vail Ski Corp. The resort has 4,800 acres (19 km²) making it the largest ski resort in California. It is also Tahoe's highest mountain with a peak of 10,067 ft (3,068 m) and the longest vertical drop on the west coast of 3,500 feet (1067 m). With 360 inches (9 m) of snow annually and one of America's largest snowmaking systems, their season usually runs from the middle of November to late April. Vail Resorts is currently starting on their 40 million dollar improvements.

On the afternoon of January 5, 1998 Heavenly was the scene of the death of musician and politician Sonny Bono. While skiing alone, Bono struck a tree on "Orion", an intermediate slope high on Heavenly's Nevada side.
