Haverhill, Massachusetts

Haverhill is a city located in Essex County, Massachusetts. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 58,969. The name of the city is pronounced "hayvrill".

History

Haverhill was first settled in 1640 and was officially incorporated in 1641.

Geography

Haverhill is located at 42°46'41" North, 71°5'6" West (42.778090, -71.084916).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 92.3 km² (35.6 mi²). 86.3 km² (33.3 mi²) of it is land and 6.0 km² (2.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.48% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 58,969 people, 22,976 households, and 14,865 families residing in the city. The population density is 683.1/km² (1,769.4/mi²). There are 23,737 housing units at an average density of 275.0/km² (712.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 89.67% White, 2.41% African American, 0.22% Native American, 1.36% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 4.30% from other races, and 2.01% from two or more races. 8.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 22,976 households out of which 33.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.0% are married couples living together, 13.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.3% are non-families. 28.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 3.11.

In the city the population is spread out with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 33.5% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 90.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $49,833, and the median income for a family is $59,772. Males have a median income of $41,197 versus $31,779 for females. The per capita income for the city is $23,280. 9.1% of the population and 7.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.3% of those under the age of 18 and 10.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
