His Royal Highness, Crown Prince Haakon Magnus of Norway was born 20 July, 1973 in Oslo. He is the only son of Their Majesties the King and Queen of Norway, Harald V and Sonja. His godparents include King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden and Queen Margrethe II of Denmark. As a descendant of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom, Haakon is currently the 61st in line to the British crown.

Haakon served in the Royal Norwegian Navy undertaking his first-level officer's education at the Norwegian Naval Academy , followed by a year aboard missile torpedo boats and other vessels. He then went abroad, receiving a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of California, Berkeley in 1999. Haakon later attended lectures at the University of Oslo and the London School of Economics, as well as completing the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs' civil servant introductory course in 2001.

He married commoner and single mother Mette-Marit Tjessem Høiby on August 25, 2001, who has since then been known as Crown Princess Mette-Marit. Their daughter, Princess Ingrid Alexandra, was born January 21, 2004, and is second in succession to the Norwegian throne. Crown Prince Haakon has one sibling, his sister Princess Märtha Louise (b. 1971).

In addition to his official duties, the Crown Prince has a strong interest in cultural matters.

Beginning Tuesday afternoon November 25, 2003, and ending in the evening of 12 April, 2004, Crown Prince Haakon was the country's regent, during the King's treatment for cancer and the following convalescence period. Likewise, the Crown Prince is Norway's regent from 29 March, 2005 and until the King has fully recovered from the heart surgery he underwent 1 April. According to the surgeons responsible for the King's treatment, this period will last for approximately two months.
