Greg Abbott

Greg Abbott is the Attorney General for the U.S. state of Texas. The 50th person to hold this post, Abbot was sworn in on December 2, 2002. Previous to assuming the office of attorney general, Abbott served as a justice on the Texas Supreme Court , a position to which he was appointed in 1995 by then-Governor George W. Bush.

Van Orden v. Perry

On March 2, 2005, Abbot argued for the state of Texas before the U.S. Supreme Court in the case of Van Orden v. Perry. The case is a challenge to the constitutionality of a government-sponsored display of the Ten Commandments on the grounds of the Texas State Capitol in Austin.

Personal history

Greg Abbott was born in Wichita Falls and raised in Duncanville. He graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in Finance, and a law degree from Vanderbilt University. Shortly after graduation, he was partially paralyzed by a falling tree while jogging.

Abbott and his wife, Cecilia, have been married for over 20 years, and they have a daughter, Audrey. They live in Austin with their daughter, Audrey.
