FA Premier League 1992-93

This article describes the FA Premier League 1992-93 season.

The first Premier League season was 1992-93, and the new league began with a 22-club format. The race for the title was contested between Manchester United, Aston Villa, Norwich City, and Blackburn Rovers, but it was Manchester United who ended the season as champions - their first league championship success since 1967. Aston Villa finished runners-up while the third and fourth places were occupied by Norwich City and Blackburn Rovers respectively.

Defending champions Leeds United were disappointing, finishing 17th in the final table and failing to achieve a single win away from home.

There were several significant managerial changes during the 1992-93 season. Before the season, Tottenham Hotspur replaced head coach Peter Shreeves with the duo of Raymond Clemence and Douglas Livermore working under chief executive Terry Venables (who had relinquished control of team affairs in the summer of 1991). At the end of the season, the two head coaches and the chief executives had their contracts terminated and Ossie Ardiles was appointed as Tottenham's new manager. Ian Poterfield left Chelsea in January to be replaced by David Webb , who in turn left at the end of the season to make way for Glenn Hoddle. Brian Clough retired after his 18-year reign as Nottingham Forest manager ended in relegation. Crystal Palace, who were also relegated, changed their managed too: Steve Coppell was promoted to the position of director of football after nine years as team manager, and his duties were taken over by assistant manager Alan Smith. Palace's tenants, Wimbledon, had changed their manager just before the start of 1992-93: Joe Kinnear was promoted from the club's coaching staff to replace Peter Withe. Norwich City replaced David Stringer with youth coach Michael Walker, and the gamble proved hugely successful as the club achieved a record third place finish in the league and qualified for European competition for the first time ever.

Player transfers also made the headlines during 1992-93. Early in the season, £2million fees saw Teddy Sheringham move from Nottingham Forest to Tottenham and Dean Saunders transferred from Liverpool to Aston Villa. Before the season, newly promoted Blackburn Rovers paid a British record fee of £3.5million for 22-year-old Southampton striker Alan Shearer.

At the end of 1992-93, Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest were relegated along with Middlesbrough, the only relegated team not to undergo an immediate managerial change. Lennie Lawrence remained in charge at Middlesbrough for one more season until he was replaced by Bryan Robson.

PFA Footballer of the Year in the first Premier League season was Sheffield Wednesday and England midfielder Chris Waddle aged 32, who had just returned to his homeland after three years in France with Olympique de Marseille. Young player of the year (for the second year running) was 19-year-old Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs. Manager of the year was Manchester United's Alex Ferguson, who returned the football league championship to the club after a 26-year absence.
