Emperor Momozono of Japan

Emperor Momozono (桃園天皇) (April 14, 1741 - August 31, 1762) was the 116th imperial ruler of Japan. He ruled from June 9, 1747 until his death. His personal name was Toohito (遐仁) and his title was originally Yaho-no-miya (八穂宮) and later Sachi-no-miya (茶地宮)

Genealogy

Momozono was the firstborn son of Emperor Sakuramachi. His mother was Lady-in-waiting Sadako (?, 定子) (Empress Dowager Kaimei, 開明門院)

Life

In 1747, he was invested as Crown Prince. Later the same year, he became Emperor upon his father, Emperor Sakuramachi's abdication.

During his reign, in 1758, the Hōreki Scandal occurred, a large number of the young court nobility were punished by the Bakufu for advocating the restoration of Imperial Rule.

In 1762, he died at the age of 22.
