Elizabeth Butler-Sloss

Rt Hon Dame Anne Elizabeth Oldfield Butler-Sloss GBE, known as Dame Elizabeth Butler-Sloss (born 10 August, 1933), is a British judge, President of the Family Division of the UK family law system. She is the first woman to hold this position.

Originally Anne Elizabeth Oldfield Havers, she was the daughter of the judge Sir Cecil Havers and sister of the Lord Chancellor Lord Havers, and was called to the bar from the Inner Temple in 1955. In 1958 she married Joseph Butler-Sloss. She became the first woman appointed as a Justice of the Court of Appeal in 1988, having in the previous year chaired the Cleveland Child Abuse Inquiry .

She was raised to the rank of Dame Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire in the New Year's Honours List published 31 December, 2004. On 12 January, 2005 it was announced that she was retiring, being replaced as President of the Division by Sir Mark Potter , a Justice of Appeal.
