Elimination

This article is about a game called elimination. For elimination in the context of chemistry see elimination reaction.

Elimination is a residence hall game where every player is both the hunter and the hunted. Those who sign up are given the name of another player and a clothespin (aka the "tag"). They must wear their clothespin ("tag") on the outside layer of clothing on their right upper arm at ALL times. The objective is to steal the tag of the person you have been assigned to eliminate and to protect yourself from elimination. The goal is to survive the game and thus be the last one standing.

Paranoia

Whatever strategy you take, invariably suspicion, and mistrust, and paranoia will haunt you. Learn to trust your instincts. Look over your shoulder.

Rules

Time Frame

In a campus setting, at least two full days should probably be allotted; from sunup of the first day to sundown of the last day.

  • note: this game takes almost no time commitment outside of your regular daily activities, it just takes being alert to who is around you, protecting yourself, and seeking out your target person.

Equipment

Each player will be supplied with a clothespin (aka the "tag"). The Referees will administrate a public scoreboard, which starts out as simply a list of the names of each player.

Gameplay

People

The Player, aka the "Eliminator". This is a person who has been assigned a Target (a fellow player) to eliminate. Note that each player is both an Eliminator (attempting to steal the tag of another) and a Target of another Eliminator.

Game Administrator, aka "Referee". This person assigns a Target to each Player, moniters kills, assigns Targets to any Terminators, and has last say in any rule dispute.

The Terminator. Any person sent out to eliminate a Player who does not make an Elimination within 8 hours. Terminators may be anyone in the residence hall, who is not active in the game.

Actions

Eliminating, or "making a kill":

  • in order for a Player to eliminate their Target, they must take the Tag from their target's right upper arm on the outer layer of clothing. If the Player can cause the Target's Tag to come loose from the clothing at all, it will be considered an elimination.
  • the Target may not touch/hold/cover their own Tag except to move it, to ensure that it is on their outer layer of clothing. Also, the Target cannot surround himself with people to keep from being eliminated.
  • to count, the Target must not be inside an illegal area.

A player having made a kill:

  • that player must report it (along with the time it happened) to the referees or to the scoreboard.
  • the Player's new Target is her Target's Target. (i.e. when you get eliminated, the person who eliminated you will take your clothespin(s), then go after the person you were after)

A player having failed to make a kill within 8 hours:

  • the Referees may send a Terminator (or 2 or 3!) after that player.
  • the Player having made a kill thereafter, the Player is safe from Terminators.

Areas, Places

A Player is inside an area if one foot is completely inside the Area, and past the inside of the door. A Player may not attempt an Elimination in an Illegal Area, punishable by Disqualification. Players and Terminators cannot force their Targets into Legal Areas.

Legal areas are all areas that are not Illegal. Suggested Illegal areas:

  • classrooms
  • the workplace
  • sports practices or games
  • bathroom / shower
  • chapel
  • RD's apartments
  • referee's rooms

Winning and Losing

Losing is not Winning.

Winning:

  • to be the last active Player in the game is to be the winner (you must eliminate at least 2 people during the course of the game to be the overall winner)
  • alternately, to be in the group of players left alive when the game ends.
  • ties are broken by: The player with the most eliminations, then by the most recent elimination.

Basic Strategies

Defensive: Run and Hide

  • Hiding the entire time is a bad idea, but hiding most of the time is wise.
  • Keep clear of places you would routinely go, when possible. Keep on the move.
  • To sleep in your own bed at night is probably a bad move, even under a locked door. Your own roommate might be a terminator. Find a trusted friend somewhere else.

Offensive: Silence and Darkness

You can't make a kill if you don't know your Target's face. You can't move intelligently if you don't know where their next move is. Stalk them. Take time to plan for each new Target you obtain.

Avoid entangling alliances

Inevitably, players strike bargains or deals, so that a few will work together, or share information. This can always backfire; have no part in it.

Alternate Play

Godfather

In this variation, players are split into five or six teams. Having made a kill, the player does not take upon himself to seek the target of the one eliminated, but rather goes to the head referee (called the "Godfather") to report his kill and ask for a new target. The Godfather may assign a player a target from his opposing team, or one on his own team, at his sole discretion, but the game must start with all targets being of another team. There may be a single Godfather, or alternately, one to preside over each team, in which case, the loyalty of Godfather to his team is at his sole discretion.
