Elbert N. Carvel

Elbert Nortrand Carvel (February 9, 1910 - February 6, 2005), was a member of the United States Democratic Party and a governor of Delaware from 1949 to 1953, and 1961 to 1965. Carvel was known as an advocate of civil rights. He served as Delaware Lieutenant Governor from 1945 to 1949. He was defeated for re-election as Governor in 1952, and unsuccessfully challenged John J. Williams for a seat in the U.S. Senate in 1958 and 1964. He died at 94 on February 6, 2005, in Laurel, Delaware.
