Edinburg, Texas

Edinburg is a city located in Hidalgo County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 48,465. It is the county seat of Hidalgo County6.

This city is the home of the Edinburg Roadrunners of the Central Baseball League Minor league baseball team. Also, the University of Texas-Pan American is located here.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 96.9 km² (37.4 mi²). 96.8 km² (37.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.13% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 48,465 people, 14,183 households, and 11,417 families residing in the city. The population density is 500.7/km² (1,296.9/mi²). There are 16,031 housing units at an average density of 165.6/km² (429.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 73.32% White, 0.58% African American, 0.47% Native American, 0.65% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 22.67% from other races, and 2.27% from two or more races. 88.68% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 14,183 households out of which 46.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.9% are married couples living together, 19.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 19.5% are non-families. 15.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.29 and the average family size is 3.71.

In the city the population is spread out with 33.0% under the age of 18, 13.1% from 18 to 24, 29.8% from 25 to 44, 15.9% from 45 to 64, and 8.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 27 years. For every 100 females there are 95.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $28,938, and the median income for a family is $30,634. Males have a median income of $27,505 versus $21,010 for females. The per capita income for the city is $11,854. 29.2% of the population and 25.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 37.2% of those under the age of 18 and 23.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
