Officially entitled simply Duran Duran (just like Duran Duran's 1981 debut album and their 1993 comeback album), this video compilation is sometimes unofficially referred to in print as the Duran Duran video album or Duran Duran: The First 11 Videos.

Background

Released in March 1983, to capitalise on the popularity of the single "Is There Something I Should Know?", the video album was the culmination of two years worth of videos.

Many of the videos were part of the Russell Mulcahy-directed "travelogue" collection of videos, featuring exotic locations, that made the band's name as a video band. Videos for tracks like "Hungry Like The Wolf" and "Save A Prayer" were showpieces of this style.

In a move that still isn't common today, videos were made during this period (1981-1983) for tracks that were never released as singles, capitalising on the strength of the tracks' overall feel. "Lonely in your Nightmare", "(Waiting for the) Nighboat" and "The Chauffeur", while great tracks in their own right were only ever album tracks.

Apart from the travelogue-style videos, the video album also featured a couple of soft core videos for "Girls On Film" and "The Chauffeur". The former, featuring girls parading in various states of undress along a catwalk, was directed by Godley & Creme. The latter, a moody black-and-white video inspired in part by the film The Night Porter, featured Billy Idol's ex-girlfriend Perri Lister performing a topless dance routine in a London multi-storey car park; the band does not appear in the video.

As a nod to the whole project, the video for "Is There Something I Should Know?" featured snippets from the other videos featured on this collection.

Of the eleven videos, "Careless Memories", "My Own Way", "Lonely In Your Nightmare" and "(Waiting for the) Nighboat" have yet to be released on DVD. The other seven videos were featured on Greatest video collection, released on DVD in 2004.

Prior to the video album's release, a "Video EP" came out in two versions. The first one had the "clean" or "day version" of "Girls On Film" alongside "Hungry Like The Wolf", while the other had the "night version" of "Girls On Film" as well as "Hungry Like The Wolf".

In February of 1984, the video album Duran Duran won a Grammy Award for Best Long Form Music Video, while the video EP won the Best Short Form award.
