Denton County, Texas

Denton County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 432,976. Its county seat is Denton6. This county is part of the Metroplex. Denton is named for John Bunyan Denton , a preacher, lawyer, and soldier killed during a raid on a Native American camp.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,481 km² (958 mi²). 2,301 km² (889 mi²) of it is land and 180 km² (69 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 7.24% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 432,976 people, 158,903 households, and 111,391 families residing in the county. The population density is 188/km² (487/mi²). There are 168,069 housing units at an average density of 73/km² (189/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 81.73% White, 5.86% Black or African American, 0.59% Native American, 4.03% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 5.56% from other races, and 2.19% from two or more races. 12.15% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 158,903 households out of which 39.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.90% are married couples living together, 8.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.90% are non-families. 22.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.67 and the average family size is 3.18.

In the county, the population is spread out with 27.70% under the age of 18, 11.30% from 18 to 24, 37.00% from 25 to 44, 19.00% from 45 to 64, and 5.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 99.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.60 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $58,216, and the median income for a family is $69,292. Males have a median income of $45,835 versus $31,639 for females. The per capita income for the county is $26,895. 6.60% of the population and 4.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.20% of those under the age of 18 and 7.10% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
