Debendranath Tagore

Debendranath Tagore (May 15, 1817 - January 19, 1905) was an Indian philosopher.

He was born in Calcutta, India. His father, Dwarkanath Tagore was a rich and famous Bengali landlord.

Debendranath believed in religious reform and was opposed to societal Hindu practices like sati. He advocated universal education to free Hinduism from such baseless beliefs. He was an active member of the Brahmo Samaj, a religious sect of Hinduism which was against sati, idol worship and the concept of multiple gods. He was asked by the founder of Brahmo Samaj Raja Ram Mohan Roy to continue his work in his absence. Brahmo Samaj came to be known as Adi Brahmo Samaj when some people broke away to form separate institutions. Debendranath remained with the original Brahmo Samaj ideas. He came to be known as Maharishi Debendranath Tagore. Rabindranath Tagore was his son.
