Cisalpine Republic

The Cisalpine Republic was a French client republic in Northern Italy from 1797 to 1802. It consisted of roughly the former Duchy of Milan, those portions of the Republic of Venice west of the Adige River, the Duchy of Modena, the Papal Legations , and the Piedmontese province of Novara.

The Cispadane Republic and the Transpadane Republic were merged (and also the province of Novara) by the French general Bonaparte, and the Cisalpine Republic was created on June 30, 1797.

The Cisalpine Republic adopted flag on May 11, 1798. It was occupied by Austria (1799) and was restored (1800) after the Battle of Marengo. In January 1802 it took the name of Italian Republic (which later, in 1805, became the Kingdom of Italy (1805-1814) ).
