Municipality of Central Highlands

The Municipality of Central Highlands is a local government area of Tasmania. It covers most of the mountainous centre of the state.

The population of the area is small and quite decentralised, resulting in a large number of small towns - Bothwell , Bronte Park , Derwent Bridge , Ouse , Liawenee , Miena and Tarraleah . Some of these towns were founded as support sites for workers on the hydro-electric dams scattered along the upper Derwent River.

The municipal area has a population of 2,488 (2001 census).
