CSI: Miami is a spinoff of the popular CBS network series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. Like the original CSI, CSI: Miami is a police procedural about a team of forensic scientists. It is set in Miami, Florida in the present. Filmed in the United States, the series has been exported to over a dozen countries worldwide. The series is distributed by Buena Vista Television.

The team investigate mysterious and unusual deaths to determine who killed them and how, and also solve other serious crimes such as rape.

Main characters

• Horatio Caine (David Caruso), head of the Miami-Dade crime lab, a forensic analyst and former bomb squad officer.
• Calleigh Duquesne (Emily Procter), ballistics specialist; originally from Darnell, Louisiana , she is fluent in Spanish and has a bachelor's degree in physics from Tulane University.
• Eric Delko (Adam Rodriguez), fingerprint and drug identification expert; a Miami native with a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of Miami, fluent in Spanish and Russian. Delko typically acts as the team's frogman when the situation arises.

Supporting cast

• Dr. Alexx Woods (Khandi Alexander), Miami-Dade coroner. She has an eccentric habit of talking to the dead bodies as she examines them, usually as a way of giving them comfort in death.
• Yelena Salas (Sofia Milos ), a homicide detective frequently attached to CSI investigations, and the widow of Horatio's brother Raymond.
• Ryan Wolfe (Jonathan Togo ), a police deputy who wanted to get into the actual forensic work; he realizes he can never replace Speed but can only do the best that he can as a member of the team. Wolfe first appeared in the episode Under the Influence, but was not made a regular until Hell Night.

Former characters

• Tim "Speed" Speedle (Rory Cochrane), trace evidence and impressions expert; originally from Syracuse, New York, with a degree in biology from Columbia University, Speed was killed in the line of duty in the third season premiere, Lost Son, when his weapon malfunctioned during a shoot-out. His character was written out by request; Cochrane wished to pursue a film career, and was not happy with CSI: Miami's long shooting schedule.
• Megan Donner (Kim Delaney), Horatio's predecessor who returned to work as investigator after mourning the death of her husband, but later retired due to the pressure caused by it. Her character was written out after 10 episodes of the first season due to the lack of chemistry between her and Caruso.

Other cast members include homicide detectives John Hagen (Holt McCallany ) and Frank Tripp (Rex Linn ).

Trivia

• Introduced as an episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation's second season, when investigators Catherine Willows and Warrick Brown, played by Marg Helgenberger and Gary Dourdan respectively, went to Miami because a murder victim's daughter was found there after the killer took her and her mother while fleeing Las Vegas.

• During the opening credits, the actors' names morph out of equations:
  • 4y - 1 = 3b(Nh) becomes David Caruso
  • 3a1 - x = (A9Xy) becomes Emily Procter
  • 3b + N = 7bn1(6A) becomes Adam Rodriguez
  • X - T4a = (7h)3XyNh becomes Khandi Alexander

• The series is primarily shot in Los Angeles; location shooting in Miami is limited to a few days each season.

• The title music is "Won't Get Fooled Again," by the 1960s British rock band The Who. The Who also provided music for the title sequences of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation ("Who Are You?") and CSI: NY ("Baba O'Riley").

• In one episode, conservationist Jeff Corwin (of Animal Planet's The Jeff Corwin Experience) is featured helping the detectives retrieve a human foot from inside a live crocodile.
