Bush mechanics is an an Australian slang expression which refers to somebody who out of necessity and with inmediate available materials, is able to solve practical problems using sometimes untraditional and inventive techniques. Generally an inventive technique is required due to the lack of proper resources or the other constraints in solving the problem using traditional means.
One example from the series listed below involved a trailer breaking an axle. As the band travelling in the car towing the trailer had to be at a gig that night, they removed the roof of the car with an angle grinder, turned it upside down and tied it to the back of the car, loaded the items from the trailer onto the upturned roof and dragged the roof behind them across the sandy track.
Bush mechanics may also be known as "bushies".
The bush mechanic promotes competent behaviour and has a strong emphasis on practical knowledge and wisdom instead of technical skills.
Bush Mechanics was a tv series directed by David Batty which followed the exploits of a group of Aboriginal Bush Mechanics as they traveled through the rugged central region of Australia. As they traverse the desert in their dilapidated vehicles, the series followed how they solved multiple car problems with inventive and wacky bush repair techniques.
