British Rail brand names

British Rail and its privatised successors have been good at creating brand names for their new products, designed to catch the eye and imagination of current and potential travellers. These have included brands both for services and Multiple units.

Services

In the 1980s and 1990s, British Rail operated services using a number of brand names:

  • Passenger Serices
    • InterCity - The high-speed express trains between major towns and cities
    • Network SouthEast (originally London & South East) - The commuter and long-distance trains operating in an area roughly bounded by King's Lynn, Peterborough, Worcester, Bedwyn, and Exeter
    • Regional Railways (originally Provincial) - All other passenger services in England and Wales, often suffixed by a regional description, e.g. Regional Railways North West
    • ScotRail - Passenger services within Scotland (officially part of Regional Railways, but with a very distinct separate identity)
    • Eurostar - International trains from London-Paris/Brussels (also used to describe the Class 373 units that operate the service)
    • Motorail - Long-distance services, that carried cars (operated as part of InterCity)
    • Ryde Rail - Passenger services on the Isle of Wight line (Ryde - Shanklin)
