Professor Johnson's main research and teaching interests include literary theory; French, English, and American literature of the nineteenth century; Afro-American literature; feminism; and translation. She is the author of Defigurations du langage poétique, The Critical Difference, A World of Difference, The Wake of Deconstruction, and The Feminist Difference, and editor of The Pedagogical Imperative, Consequences of Theory (with Jonathan Arac), and Freedom and Interpretation: Oxford Amnesty Lectures 1992. Her most recent book, Mother Tongues: Sexuality, Trials, Motherhood, Translation, is forthcoming.
