Akershus is a county in Norway, bordering Hedmark, Oppland, Buskerud, Oslo and Østfold. It borders Sweden for a short distance (Värmland). In 2004 there were 488,618 inhabitants, which is 10.5% of the total population in Norway. Akershus is the second largest county in population after Oslo. Its area is 4,917 km². The county administration is in Oslo, which is not part of the county per se.

Akershus is parted in two different areas east and west of Oslo. The small area in west includes the districts of Asker and Bærum. The vast part is east of the city, consisting of the landscapes Follo in southwest and Romerike in north and east. Akershus includes some of the lake Mjøsa and some of the river Glomma. Embracing numerous suburbs of Oslo, Akershus is one of the most densely populated areas in the country. The main national railway lines into Oslo run through Akershus with many junctions and stations such as Sandvika and Lillestrøm.

The county also includes the historical place Eidsvoll, 30 miles(48 km)north of Oslo, in which the National assembly voted the Norwegian constitution in 1814. South of Eidsvoll is the international airport of Gardermoen. The estate of the crown prince is situated in Asker.
