Airy fairy

Airy fairy was originally used to describe somthing delicate (see, for example, Tennyson or W. S. Gilbert). By the 1920s ( it had become disparaging, meaning weak and insubstantial (see, for example, D. H. Lawrence). By the late 19th Century, "fairy" had become an anti-gay insult.
