Advowson

Advowson is the right in English law of presenting a nominee to a vacant ecclesiastical benefice. In effect this means the right to nominate a person to hold a church office.

This is now of mainly historical importance, but in mediaeval times and earlier, when the church was politically and economically very important, such a right could have great significance. An example can be seen in the article on Grendon (Northamptonshire).
