Adak, Alaska

Adak is a census-designated place located in Aleutians West Census Area, Alaska. As of the 2000 census, the population of the CDP is 316. Other than Attu Station it is the westernmost town in the United States (see Extreme points of the United States), and the southernmost city in Alaska.

Adak was founded in the 1950s.

Adak is located on Adak Island in the Andreanof Islands group of the Aleutian Islands.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 329.7 km² (127.3 mi²). 316.9 km² (122.3 mi²) of it is land and 12.8 km² (4.9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.87% water.

Adak is situated on Kuluk Bay on Adak Island.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 316 people, 159 households, and 61 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 1.0/km² (2.6/mi²). There are 884 housing units at an average density of 2.8/km² (7.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 49.68% White, 1.27% Black or African American, 35.13% Native American, 9.81% Asian, 1.90% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 2.22% from two or more races. 5.06% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 159 households out of which 18.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 28.9% are married couples living together, 2.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 61.6% are non-families. 46.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 0.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.99 and the average family size is 2.90.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 18.7% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 44.3% from 25 to 44, 26.3% from 45 to 64, and 1.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 184.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 188.8 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $52,727, and the median income for a family is $53,889. Males have a median income of $46,429 versus $35,000 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $31,747. 4.7% of the population and 3.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.0% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
