January 2 - Three Carlow women are killed in a night of bombing in parts of Leinster.
January 13 - The poet and novelist James Joyce dies in Switzerland.
January 24 - Part of the old State Chambers in Dublin Castle are destroyed by fire.
March 6 - 3,800 animals are slaughtered after the fiftieth case of foot & mouth disease is announced.
March 20 - Bread rationing is introduced.
April 22 - 500 people are killed and 2,000 people are injured in bombing raids on Belfast.
May 5 - Belfast suffers its third bombing raid during World War II. Emergency services from the South are sent to assist in the destruction which ensues.
May 14 - Five outbreaks of foot and mouth diesase are reported in Ireland.
May 26 - A special sitting of Dáil Éireann unanimously condemns the intoduction of conscription in Northern Ireland.
May 27 - Speaking in the House of Commons Prime Minister Winston Churchill rules out the introduction of conscription in the North.
May 31 - 34 people are killed when the Luftwaffe bomb part of Dublin.
October 12 - Charles Stewart Parnell, the uncrowned King of Ireland, is honoured in a huge pageant in Dublin.
